IRBn was sanctioned in the year 1996 by Government of India. The initial sanction was for UT of Lakshadweep. Subsequently, the Battalion was shared among three UTs viz Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli in the year 1997.
50% of the strength has been recruited from UT of Lakshadweep and the remaining 50% from UT of Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli in line with the Govt. of India orders.
The strength of the Battalion has been shared among the two Union Territories at the ratio of FOUR Companies in Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli and THREE Companies in Lakshadweep with the Headquarters at Kavaratti.
The Battalion personnel are required to undergo, basic training [18 months – 9 + 9], attachment training for six months with BSF, two months with CRPF and one month with Indian Army as per the guidelines of Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D).
The recruits were imparted basic training in BSF/CRPF training Institutions such as STC, BSF Bangalore, Tekenpur and Jodhpur.
The Battalion, on raising, was formally dedicated to the Nation by Shri. L. K. Advani, Former Hon’ble Home Minister of India on 16-12-2000 at Mota Randha, Silvassa.
The Battalion has a total sanctioned strength of 1007. At present battalion strength is 813 and 194 posts are lying vacant.
Duties:–
Assisting Local Police & Administration in maintaining law and
Bandobast duties for VIP and VVIPs.
Escorting of VIP and PSO duties.
Static guard at Treasury, Secretariat, Helipad/Airport, Government House.
Guarding Jail and escorting Prisoners.
Escort for Currency Chest.
Assisting Local Administration duties, rescue operations in natural calamities.
Any other duties being assigned by Police or Administration.
The Battalion components are divided into seven Companies viz. A, B, C, D, E, F, & G. One Company each deployed in the UTs of Daman & Diu and two Companies are deployed in UT of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and three Companies are deployed in the UT of Lakshadweep. As per the Standing Order No.3 and MHA order No.U.14012/3/2013-ANL Dated:13/12/2016 the deployment of companies at Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli will have frequent even rotation at the interval of 2 years.
