Profile

The Department of Road Transport formed in Lakshadweep during the year 1990. The Motor Vehicle Inspector is the Licensing Authority in Lakshadweep Islands and Registration Authority in Kavaratti. Sub Divisional Officers/Deputy Collectors are functioning as ex-officio Registration Authority of vehicles in their respective Islands.

Details of Schemes and Projects

• Financial Assistance (Subsidy) of 15% will be given to promote purchasing of Battery Operated Two Wheeler & Four Wheeler Vehicles.
• E-Rikshaws promotion by providing 50% subsidy (subject to Rs. 50,000/ upper limit)

Major Achievements

The department is fully computerized since 09-08-2006 in Kavaratti, and in other Islands from January 2009 and hence all transactions are being done in All India pattern with the help of new software “SARATHI” and “VAHAN” developed by NIC, New Delhi, for issuance of Driving Licenses and Registration of Motor Vehicles respectively. HSRP implemented on 15-06-2012.
