Department of Legal Metrology

About Department

A law enforcement department, mandated with the responsibilities of ensuring consumer protection by implementing the following Acts and rules.

  1. The  Legal Metrology Act, 2009
  2. The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011
  3. The Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011
  4. The Legal Metrology (Numeration) Rules, 2011
  5. The Legal Metrology (National Standards) Rules, 2011
  6. The Legal Metrology (Approval of Models) Rules, 2011
  7. The Lakshadweep Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2010

Activities of the department 

  1.  Verification & stamping of weights and measures in the possession of traders.
  2. Calibration and Stamping of Vertical Oil Storage Tanks.
  3.  Verification / re-verification & stamping of Dispensing Pumps & Flow Meters.Ø Calibration of Vehicle Tank.
  4. Verification & Stamping of Weigh Bridge.
  5. Inspection shops & establishments to ensure compliance of Acts & Rules
  6. Registration  of Manufacturers / Packers under Packaged Commodities RulesØ Issuing NOC for  non users of weights and Measures for getting Trade License
  7. Conducting awareness generation programmes to stake holders.

The Secretary (Legal Metrology) is designated as Controller of Legal Metrology. There are Three Units under one Inspector each in the  islands of Kavaratti, Kadmat and Andrott.

Mission

  • To give prompt attention to public grievances relating to weights & measures and dispose  them off as quickly as possible
  • To take all possible steps for enforcement of Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and the Rules made  there-under
  • To take all necessary steps to ensure correctness of Weights, Measures Weighing and Measuring Instruments in Lakshadweep
  • To undertake verification and stamping of weights, measures, weighing and measuring instruments in Lakshadweep
  • To conduct Awareness generation Programmes on Legal Metrology Act & Rules in islands
