Department of Legal Metrology

Profile

The Department of Legal Metrology is enforcing Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and Lakshadweep Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2010. The Department is conducting verification and stamping of weights, measures, weighing and measuring instruments etc. to ensure accuracy in weighment and measurement. Due to the implementation of Packaged Commodities Rules, packaged commodities are now available to the consumers within the marked price. The department is also conducting of Awareness Generation programmes on Legal Metrology Act & Rules.

  • Implementation of Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
  • Implementation of Lakshadweep Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2010 –(Enacted on 20.11.2010)
  • Implementation of Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011
  • Verification & stamping of weights, measures, weighing and measuring instruments under the possession of local traders and other users in all islands of Lakshadweep
  • Conducting of Awareness Generation Programs on Legal Metrology Act & Rules
  • Inspection of Shops & Establishments to ensure compliance of Acts & Rules
  • Registration of manufacturers/packers under packaged commodities Rules, 2011

Current Activities

  • Verification and stamping of weights, measures, weighing and measuring instruments and  issues of verification certificate to local traders in all islands on the same day of producing.
  • Inspection /Surprise checking of shops & establishments to ensure compliance of Acts & Rules
  • Issuing of Registration Certificate of manufacturers/ packers under Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011
  • Issuing NOC for non users of weights and Measures for getting fresh License/ renewal.

Major Achievements

  • Carried out Verification and Stamping of all Weights, Measures, Weighing and measuring Instruments in all Islands.
  • No case of short weighments/ short delivery reported due to inspection of  shops and establishments.
  • Due to implementation of Packaged Commodities Rules, packaged commodities are available on MRP rate.
  • Conducted Awareness generation Programmes in 9 Islands during last
  • Manufacturers/ packers Registered under Rule 27 of Legal Metrology (packaged commodities) Rules, 2011.

New Initiatives

  • Calibration of Dispensing Pumps in near future.
  • Calibration of Vertical Oil Storage Tank.
  • Setting up of Public Weighing Booths in all Islands.
  • Calibration of water Meter (Domestic type).
