Department of Agriculture is one of the biggest technical establishments under Lakshadweep Administration mandated with various objectives to serve the farming community of Lakshadweep on behalf of UTL Administration and Government of India. The main objective of the department is to ensure the well-being of the farming community through their socio-economic development by formulation and implementation of well –oriented and specifically developed agricultural improvement strategies.

Till 1952, it was the practice to send an Agricultural Assistant on deputation from Mainland to Lakshadweep for short period. From 1952 an Assistant from Agricultural Department in Malabar was permanently posted. An Agriculture Demonstrator was posted in 1955 with his headquarters at Agatti Island. On November 1^st 1956 with the Lakshadweep coming under central Government as a union territory more staffs were recruited.
