Hon’ble Vice President makes maiden visit to Union Territory of Lakshadweep
Kavaratti : Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu arrived in Agatti on 31st December 2021 for his maiden two-day official visit to Lakshadweep. The Vice President was accompanied by Smt. M. Usha, spouse of Hon’ble Vice President. On arrival, the Vice President was received by Shri Praful Patel, Hon’ble Administrator, and senior officials of Lakshadweep Administration in Agatti Airport. A large number of local residents gathered at Agatti to welcome the Hon’ble Vice President.
On 1st January 2022, in an event held at Kadmath, Hon’ble Vice President Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated two Government Arts and Sciences Colleges in Kadmat and Androth islands which are affiliated to the Pondicherry University in the presence of Shri Praful Patel, Hon’ble Administrator, Shri PP Mohammed Faizal, Hon’ble MP for the Lakshadweep Constituency and Shri Gurmeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Pondicherry University and other senior officials of the Lakshadweep Administration. The newly inaugurated colleges offer various courses such as BSc. Aquaculture, BSc. Maths as well as job-oriented courses such as Bachelor of Vocational Studies (B. Voc) courses in Software Development, Tourism and Catering and Hospitality.
Hon’ble Vice President lauded the Lakshadweep Administration for developing five new colleges in the last ten months, namely, Polytechnic College at Minicoy, Nursing College at Kavaratti, Para-Medical College at Kavaratti and the two Government Arts and Science Colleges at Kadmat and Androth. The Hon’ble Vice President said that he is sure these five colleges will not only serve the aspirations of the youth of the islands, but will also have a great multiplier effect and redefine the socio-economic landscape of the region.
Hon’ble Vice President highlighted the huge potential of eco-tourism and fisheries in the islands of Lakshadweep and called upon youth of Lakshadweep to utilize courses offered in aquaculture, tourism, and hospitality sectors to strive for excellence in the sectors where they have a natural advantage.
Hon’ble Vice President stated that the courses offered in the arts and science colleges in Kadamat and Androth islands would help the students of the islands, especially girl students in overcoming the geographical constraints and pursuing quality higher education.
Hon’ble Vice President during his address also praised the unique confluence of ancient cultural heritage and pristine natural beauty of Lakshadweep islands. Praising the beauty of Lakshadweep, he appealed the people that everyone must try to visit the islands at least once in their lifetime. He also lauded the Lakshadweep Administration for its ban on single-use plastic and shifting to clean and green energy.
Apart from the inauguration of colleges, the official visit also became an opportunity for the inauguration of 50,000 liters water per daily capacity RO Plant in Bangaram island and this will address the problem of potable water shortage in the island.
